The Ride review

Image
The Ride is available on Prime Video for your viewing pleasure.   Do you ever get that feeling that you are missing something?  That is how I have been feeling recently.  When I watched "The Ride" once again I started to really remember my childhood and where I am originally from.   The Ride is a film set in Petaluma, CA which is near where I am from in northern California in Clearlake, CA and the surrounding towns in Lake County.  The film is about a young man named John McCord who is taken from his family and sent to juvenile hall at a young age, then is placed in a home for foster care.  John has to battle his demons of his past and also the Aryan brotherhood of his family.   His foster father is played by Ludacris of Fast and the Furious fame and race becomes factor in their relationship.  They have to come to terms that even if they don't look the same, they are family.  It shows how it is so hard to trust someone i...

The Queens Gambit on Netflix

Image
Hello everyone I know it has been awhile but I haven't really watched anything I have wanted to review in the past few months but I have come across a few recently.  Last night I just started watching The Queens Gambit on Netflix.  It is an interesting tale of if you have talent and exercise that talent you can do anything.   The story starts with Elizabeth Harmon, an orphaned girl at after the death of her mother, goes to the Muelen orphanage near Lexingtion, Kentucky.  She meets a friend named Jolene and also a janitor that teaches her chess.  This leads to Harmon's chess ability growing since the age of 9.  When she is adopted by a new family she finally get the chance she needs to expound her chess ability.  She travels all over the world competing in chess tournaments.   This script is well written, the visuals are picturesque, and it makes you are there in the 1960s with Harmon during all of her competiti...

Retro review: Stallone, Van Damme and Arnold.

Image
Stallone, Van Damme, and Arnold, Sounds like an Expendables movie.  Welcome to Lance at the movies, today we are going to talk about boxing, fighting, and cop buddy movies.  First, we will talk about the best picture winner Rocky.  Now I know most of you have seen Rocky and will tell me Lance why are you reviewing Rocky all of us have seen it?  This is a review to see if the movie stands up in 2020.   It is 1976 and Sylvester Stallone is not a household name.  He writes a script and tells producers he wants to play the role himself, taking a big gamble.  Then it wins Best picture and Best screenplay that year.  This film is filled with the underdog spirit, anything you think you can't do, you can with hard work and a drive and determination to do it, that is the American way.   I remembered all the joy rooting for Rocky when I was a kid and it is still a great film, but the one thing I did notice was the boxing.  The still of h...

In his Image review

I don't own the rights to these images.  They are used as fair use.  Hello everyone this is Lance at the Movies blog.  I was referred this film by a friend this morning and thought I would check it out.  I thought it would be a preachy, intrusive, judgemental film like I had seen in the past.  But I was wrong it is a different kind of film then I normally review.   But it is an important film for anyone who has family or friends who are gay and wondering how to minster to them.   So many churches have passed judgement on those who maybe gay or transgender but that does not mean we need to.  These individuals are people.  It is so easy to write people off and discard them instead of love them.  It is easy to judge and hate.  But that is not what God wants us to do.  We need to love everyone who is different from us.  We need to see their point of view:  wrong or right.  Love them for who they are...

Crawl a good film for this Halloween season

Image
Hello everyone I am back with another review.  It is a creature feature, a new film you can find at your local Redbox while you are trying to figure out what to do when the trick or treating is all finished.   From Sam Raimi and Alexandre Aja comes an alligator survivor film! This film takes place in the middle of a hurricane in the Florida everglades.  A swimmer who competes for the University of Florida gets a call from her sister, telling her to evacuate and get to safety.  But then the sister asks about their father.  The University student does not know where he is but does want to check on him.  So she makes her way south to check on the safety of her father.  She searches around the condo he owns but does not find him.  So she decides to go to her childhood home to see if she can find him.  She finds him but gets way more then she expected when the cellar of the house is filled with alligators.   This leads to a fr...

Escape Room Review

Image
Hello friends it is me again with another review.  If you are headed to a Redbox or looking for something to watch that you can watch with your teens and you want an old fashion suspense, mystery film then this is the one for you.  The film takes place with 6 strangers who are given a box to open.  Once they open the box and invitation pops out and they are invited to an escape room at an escape room company.  They will need to solve various puzzles and then they will receive 10,000 dollars.  But they experience terror and a need to survive in this film full of puzzles and problem solving.   I would reccommend this film, it has the style of a poe novel or Alfred Hitchcock film.  It was interesting to see what the director did in this film.  It is well written and you won't be dissappointed.  It is a film that keeps you on the edge of your feet.  It gets 3 1/2 Karate chops from me.  I would reccommend this film mainly for...

Brian Banks

Image
Here is my Hulu review.  Out now on Hulu is the inspirational film about Brian Banks, a once high school hopeful for the NFL who had his whole life taken away because of the accusations of one person.  This is a very powerful and moving film about integrity and determination.  He is accused of rape by someone while he is in high school but he is innocent.  He does nothing and goes to prison for something he didn't do and then he has to fight for his life in order to make himself free. He seeks help from the Innocent Project and they help him take the steps to be free. This is an amazing film which features determination, courage and an element in life to never give up.  Yes he did receive help but without his determination and will to fight for his innocence, he would still be either in prison or a registered sex offender.  I would recommend this film to anyone who loves sports films and inspirational films.   I give it a 3 and 1/2 Karate Chops....
